Washing machine faults not worth fixing

Grinding noise when the drum turns

Fault

Water has entered the main bearing

This is a common fault.

Symptoms:

The machine washes as normal but is very noisy when the drum is turning.

To diagnose

Open the door on an empty machine and turn the drum by hand. It should be a nice "smooth" motion. Any grinding noise and the bearing has gone. If the bearings are very worn the drum may also "rock" when pulled.

The video below is a random one selected showing this fault.

They are a nightmare to change and actually unless you change the "Drum Support" any repair will normally not last very long and water will again get in to it. There are two bearings and getting them out, and the new ones in, is a job and a half.

Sadly at this point you should just get a new machine.
