We are still concerned with threats to our surroundings. At the start of the decade building of the re-routed A40 was completed and the new Hillingdon Station was built. Increased road noise from the new road has affected many houses in Ickenham, and we are still battling to have measures taken to combat this.
TESCO put in a planning application to demolish the Master Brewer Motel and build a large supermarket on the site; this was refused and their next application was for a supermarket with a motel above it. It would seem that the building would not be in their usual 'good taste', but would match the "White Elephant" design of Hillingdon Station.
In 1996 Warner Brothers announced plans to build a 'Movie World' Theme Park and Studios on Green Belt land at Hillingdon House Farm. After a 16-months battle against them, including a protest march of 2,000 people from across the Borough and a lot of support from our MP, Sir Michael Shersby, President of the London Green Belt Council, Warner Bros. announced that they were dropping their plans. Unfortunately, Sir Michael died just before their announcement was made.
Central Railways announced plans to build a Rail Freight Terminal at Denham, with ½ mile long trains going through Ickenham and more lorries on roads near us. This plan was rejected in Parliament, but they are now putting forward a similar plan. We have written to Central Railways, asking for clarification on several points.
Other concerns during this decade:
· The enlargement of Douay Martyrs School
· British Rail Services at West Ruislip
· Unitary Development Plan
· Allotments in Glebe Avenue
· Northolt Aerodrome
· Mount Vernon and Harefield Hospital
· Development at 4a Swakeleys Road
· Development at 11 Swakeleys Road (Right of Way)
· Ickenham as a Postal Address
· Traffic - speeding and parking problems
· Review of Ward Boundaries
· Fire Protection Services in Hillingdon
· Change of use of shop premises to take-way food shops
· Green Belt - and Swakeleys Lake 1991 -2000 cont'd.
More building of houses took place; the Church Place development on the old Home Farm site was completed; the old school playing field at 119 - 129 Long Lane was built on - Turnstone Close is now on that site; various other 'in-fill' developments have been proposed, some of which were granted and some rejected.
Other developments: the Pump was refurbished in 1992; after some public fundraising, the Crosier Memorial in St. Giles Churchyard was restored; the U10 bus route was started between Ruislip and Uxbridge and went round the Glebe and Swakeleys Estates; Ickenham traders started their Christmas evening event.
In 1992 the Ickenham Residents' Association AGM was moved from November to April to avoid cold, dark evenings - it snowed ! We started Social Evenings for our Road Stewards to thank them for the work they do for us all year in delivering our Newsletter "Ickenham Calling …. " and collecting subscriptions. Without their valuable help we would have no Association, and we always need Road and Area Stewards, as well as Committee Members.
THE NEXT MILLENIUM:
Hillingdon Council has recently proposed changes to the Ickenham Conservation Area; we have questioned these and hope that the most important parts of the Area will remain unchanged as Conservation Area rules give some protection from developers.
We have recently discovered that Lovells, who own land to the south and east of Ickenham, wish to sell the land. In the 1930s it was proposed to build an estate of 2311 acres on this land, which would have 'joined us up' to Ruislip Gardens. The land is mostly Green Belt, but the loss of it to building would not only mean the loss of our green and pleasant surroundings, but increased pressure on our roads and other amenities.
